PT Cruiser production has reportedly been cut to around half the level of the same time last year, as the Toluca factory has been put to work pumping out the Dodge Journey. Ironically, building the Journey on the same line as the PT may actually extend the life of the PT Cruiser, because with fewer produced, the need for incentives and advertising should be smaller, and the little crossover should be more profitable for both Chrysler and dealers. Welcome to our new, marginally faster server. Coming soon: some of the PT development story that you haven’t heard before. See our new 2008 Sunset Boulevard Edition PT Cruiser review / test drive! See the PT Cruiser video! Despite a post-redesign drop in sales, the PT Cruiser was the Chrysler brand’s third best selling model in 2006 and 2007, with 138,650 and 99,585 sales, respectively. Sales have continued to drop by huge margins - one third to one half - in recent months; the restyling has not been well received, and Chrysler has reduced incentives to fleets and individual buyers. In February, the PT fell to Chrysler brand’s fourth-biggest seller, with just 3,582 sales (plus 2,005 convertibles - still in fourth place). With a sales drop of 55%, the PT would sell just 42,384 copies per year at this rate - but, then again, it was originally set to sell just 35,000 a year, so it’s still ahead of projections...
The PT Cruiser GT is no longer available; and the PT Cruiser Convertible has been dropped. The Chrysler PT Cruiser itself will be dropped after the 2009 model year. If the Dodge Journey does not do as well as anticipatd, though, the PT could continue, since both are made on the same line, and production can switch between them with no time delay. Chrysler PT Cruiser informationThe Chrysler PT Cruiser has good handling, fits in a small parking space, and holds full-sized adults and their luggage in comfort. With attractive pricing and high reported reliability, the PT is a great car for a great price. The reverse-Watts suspension packs a lot of cornering and ride quality into a small space — a space smaller than a Neon on the outside, with more cargo space than many mid-sized cars on the inside.
